Aline Pitanga and Roy Nasser invite you to kick off the Henna* Party with a beachside BBQ in traditional Morroccan-style. Grab your kaftan and fez and get ready to dance! And YES, men are expected to attend!
*What's henna?
Henna is a plant-based dye that has been used for centuries in north Africa, the Middle East, and India. It is often applied to women’s hands in intricate patterns. In Moroccan Jewish tradition, the henna ceremony is part of the fertility rituals preceding a wedding. Some also believe henna wards off the evil eye.
According to custom, the word henna (pronounced as the guttural “Chenna”) is an acronym representing the three mitzvot (commandments) specific to married women: Challah (separating the challah), Niddah (family purity) and Hadlakat Neirot (lighting Shabbat candles).

According to Jewish tradition, the Sabbath (Shabbat, in Hebrew) was offered as a “kallah” (bride) to the Jewish people, and the Shabbat evening preceding a wedding is known as the “Shabbat Kallah,” the Bride’s Shabbath.
We look forward to welcoming you to our wedding weekend with a traditional Shabbat meal, hosted by Anita Smaga, Sabina's grandmother.
A Note: Shabbat and Chanukah candles will be available for lighting starting at 5:00 pm in the Miramar Courtyard.

Shabbat morning services and Michael's Aufruf* will be held at 10:00am and will be followed by Kiddush (blessing over wine) and Brunch starting at 11:30am, hosted by Fagi and Eddie Goldfarb.
*An Auf...what? - yes, Sabina had to look it up too... An Aufruf (which in Yiddish means "calling up"), is the Jewish custom of the groom being called up to the bimah (the raised platform in a synagogue) for an aliyah, the reading of the blessing over the Torah. Watch out, though: when we're done, prepare for the obligatory shower of candies and nuts -- wishes for a sweet marriage!
